I had a vivid dream last night.\u00a0 In this dream, a friend was very proud of her published article in a certain magazine.\u00a0 She asked me to read it.\u00a0 I was very excited and was looking forward to a pleasant and proud read, \u201cSure, where is it?\u201d<\/p>\n

She hands me the magazine and says, \u201cIt\u2019s in there\u201d.<\/p>\n

I start thumbing through the magazine.\u00a0 The type was very small, and all the articles started with the same 6 words, making it:<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Very difficult to read, because the type was small and in italics.<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Time consuming, because all the article titles started the same.<\/p>\n

I was squinting and found myself losing interest the longer I searched.\u00a0 Then my self-doubt set in.\u00a0 \u2018Maybe I scanned the titles too quickly?\u00a0 Maybe I misread some of the titles? Maybe I\u2019ve actually passed the article?\u2019\u00a0 So I confessed, \u201cI can\u2019t seem to find the article in here.\u201d<\/p>\n

She quickly said, \u201cIt\u2019s in there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The more I searched, the more impatient I became.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m not seeing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was now getting frustrated, \u201cIt\u2019s there.\u00a0 Keep looking\u201d.<\/p>\n

By the time I found the article on page 101, I was not in the right frame of mind to read it.\u00a0 At this moment I woke up with one question in my head: \u201cWhy didn\u2019t I ask which page her article was on, in the first place?\u201d<\/p>\n

Asking the right question isn\u2019t as easy as it sounds.\u00a0 First \u2013 we need to recognize that an important question needs to be asked.\u00a0 Second \u2013 we need to decide what that \u2018important question\u2019 would be.<\/p>\n

In my dream, I was so caught up in the \u2018action\u2019 of finding the article that I did not pause to recognize my mounting frustration.\u00a0 Although my initial goal was to pleasantly and proudly read my friend\u2019s published article, it mutated into merely finding the article.\u00a0 By the time I actually found it, I was neither pleasant nor excited.\u00a0 Even though I found the article, I didn\u2019t read it (failed at the essence of my goal).<\/p>\n

One recommendation is to use your emotional trigger of frustration, or impatience as a sign that a question needs to be asked.<\/p>\n
