\"\"<\/a>According to Marshall Goldsmith, leadership expert and best-selling author, \u201c80 percent of our success in learning from other people is based upon how well we listen\u201d.\u00a0 We know it\u2019s the \u201cright\u201d thing to do, yet we are continually challenged to do it well.\u00a0 What gets in our way of listening?<\/p>\n

Too many distractions<\/strong>.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to stay focused on what someone else is saying when there are sidebar conversations, bad line connections, and electronic gadgets buzzing, multi-tasking rampant.\u00a0 Be sure to establish ground rules for your teams to create the most productive environment as possible.\u00a0 When engaging virtual team members, be sure everyone knows call-in details and what to do if the call unexpectedly is disconnected.\u00a0 Avoid putting your phone on hold during the teleconference especially if you\u2019re calling from a phone that plays music.<\/p>\n

Making assumptions.<\/strong>\u00a0 Often, we make the mistake of assuming one situation is the same as another, when it may be very different.\u00a0 We all have the potential to make assumptions about what others are telling us.\u00a0 To avoid making assumptions, listen as objectively as possible.\u00a0 There are two essential skills that will help us identify assumptions and manage them.\u00a0 The first is to reflect back to people what we believe they have told us, using our own words.\u00a0 This allows the other person to immediately correct our misunderstandings.\u00a0 The second thing we can do to check our understanding of information is to ask open questions.\u00a0 Questions beginning with \u201cwhen\u201d, \u201cwho\u201d, \u201cwhat\u201d and \u201chow\u201d are particularly useful for gathering facts.<\/p>\n

Planning our response<\/strong>.\u00a0 If we begin to formulate our response as someone else is speaking, we have stopped listening.\u00a0 A great exercise to emphasize the importance of complete listening goes like this:\u00a0 Pair up participants and ask each pair to stand face-to-face.\u00a0 Identify who will start the conversation.\u00a0 The person begins with a simple sentence.\u00a0 The other participant responds to this sentence, starting with a word that begins with the last letter of the other person\u2019s sentence.\u00a0 Have participants continue the conversation, using the same procedure for about 3 minutes.\u00a0 Active listening is a must!<\/p>\n

Give everyone who is speaking your undivided attention.\u00a0 This means not only listen to one another, but also demonstrate your listening through verbal and non-verbal signals.\u00a0 Sometimes quiet listening is the best way to be heard.<\/p>\n
