{"id":5944,"date":"2011-02-02T18:19:11","date_gmt":"2011-02-03T01:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=5944"},"modified":"2011-02-02T18:19:11","modified_gmt":"2011-02-03T01:19:11","slug":"fore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=5944","title":{"rendered":"Fore!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/fore-beware-of-the-blonde-swinging-her-golf-club-like-a-weed-wacker1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-5946\" src=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/fore-beware-of-the-blonde-swinging-her-golf-club-like-a-weed-wacker1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"90\" height=\"90\" \/><\/a>Whether it\u2019s giving a standard project status update of delivering bad news on a project that has gone awry, how you convey yourself can make or break your reputation.\u00a0 Do you have what it takes to deliver a winning presentation?<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->For me, speaking in front of an audience is like learning how to play golf.\u00a0 It looks easy when watching others; yet when doing it myself, well, that\u2019s a different story.\u00a0\u00a0 Here are four things to think about for your presentations as well as your golf game:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Natural talent is irrelevant to great success<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some believe it is not natural talent that makes someone great; it is years of constant practice.\u00a0 Ever heard of the 10-Year Rule?\u00a0 It means it takes about ten years of dedicated practice to excel at what you do.\u00a0 Tiger Woods started playing golf when he was 18 months old; it took him 18 years to achieve champion status.\u00a0 Don\u2019t have ten years to practice your presentation?\u00a0 How about 10 minutes at the start and end of each day for ten days before your scheduled appearance.\u00a0 There are a number of free recording apps are available that will allow you to hear how your sound.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be simplistic in your approach.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you think about everything you have to do to master a great presentation or 18 holes of golf, you can get carried away quickly.\u00a0 In golf, you need to have the right grip, retain a natural stance, maintain a sweeping swing, and maximize coil for distance.\u00a0 When making presentations, remember to know your content, tell the truth, keep materials to a minimum, and engage the audience.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Know your stuff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do you speak the right language?\u00a0 In golf, an ace is a hole in one; a buzzard is two strokes over par, and \u201cFore!\u201d\u00a0 is what you shout to warn players ahead of an approaching ball.\u00a0 When making a presentation, remember to reduce or eliminate jargon, slang or abbreviations.\u00a0 If the company has its own language, be sure that everyone in the audience knows it before you say it, especially if you have external parties in the audience.\u00a0 If using PowerPoint, never read your slides.\u00a0 Your audience can do that without you. Refer to audience members by name to establish rapport.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Know your equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/fore-beware-of-the-blonde-swinging-her-golf-club-like-a-weed-wacker.jpg\"><\/a>Can the right equipment help you play better golf?\u00a0 It certainly can.\u00a0 And if you\u2019ve done any shopping lately, you know that you can pay a whole lot for the latest high-tech driver if you want to.\u00a0 Does the person who owns the $400 driver perform better than the person with the $10 find at the local garage sale?\u00a0 Not always.\u00a0 When making a presentation, don\u2019t get carried away with high-tech software and gadgets.\u00a0 Unless you are Steve Jobs, you don\u2019t need to woo your audience with bells and whistles.\u00a0 They are there to hear the business, not be mesmerized by lasers and lighting.\u00a0 If you have virtual members in the audience, be sure to know how to use the equipment.\u00a0 A simple test run is usually all that is needed to master conference room equipment.<\/p>\n<p>While I can\u2019t guarantee you\u2019ll
