{"id":4836,"date":"2010-09-29T07:00:25","date_gmt":"2010-09-29T14:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=4836"},"modified":"2010-09-25T08:30:59","modified_gmt":"2010-09-25T15:30:59","slug":"find-ways-to-have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=4836","title":{"rendered":"Find ways to have your cake and eat it too."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this\u00a0 discus<a href=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/cake.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4840\" src=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/cake-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>sion, I cover some quick tips for Work\/Life Balance.<\/p>\n<p>One of the tricks to a positive Work\/Life Balance is the ability to blend your personal and business aspects.\u00a0 As a small business owner or even student \u2013 you have a unique and rare opportunity to do this blending.<\/p>\n<p>Tips that will also help:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Combining like (similar) activities\n<ul>\n<li>Schedule, consolidate, and confine email, phone calls, and other correspondence<\/li>\n<li>Confine outside meetings, home estimates and errands to certain \u201croad-trip days\u201d, leaving the rest of week for uninterrupted project work time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Combining \u201cthings you don\u2019t have time for\u201d with other tasks\n<ul>\n<li>Have one-on-one meetings with staff\/client\/friends as you walk around your building for exercise<\/li>\n<li>Take kids along when you walk the dog at night.\u00a0 Many children actually \u201cwind-up\u201d before \u201cwinding down\u201d.\u00a0 If this is a common scenario at your home, use the info.\u00a0 Schedule an \u201cenergy burning\u201d activity prior to bedtime to burn off the excess energy (like walking the dog).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Properly triaging incoming tasks versus \u201cfirst in\/first out\u201d default mode\n<ul>\n<li>Clearly articulate and frequently review your goals, vision and mission<\/li>\n<li>Use the 4-Ds and 4 Quadrants to triage<\/li>\n<li>Make sure every activity supports and propels you forward (instead of stalling you)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Focus on the essence more than the task\n<ul>\n<li>Keep in mind \u201cthe why\u201d you are doing this task<\/li>\n<li>During the course of completing a long or difficult task, tasks may mutate away from your original goals<\/li>\n<li>Often times there are many, many ways to accomplish the essence of your goal or the \u201cwhy you are doing this\u201d.\u00a0 This particular \u201ctask\u201d is just a tool \u2013 it\u2019s not the \u201cend-goal\u201d.\u00a0 It\u2019s okay to abandon the task if it\u2019s no longer providing benefit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Expect the unexpected\n<ul>\n<li>Use sprints and buffers to prepare for interruptions<\/li>\n<li>Even though you don\u2019t know exactly what will interrupt you \u2013 you know interruptions will occur.\u00a0 Plan with that knowledge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Create contingency plans (fire escape\/emergency plans) that support your overall goals (versus taking away from your goals)\n<ul>\n<li>Create contingency plans when everyone is of calm and cool minds<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t discuss your fire exits during the fire.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Stop to differentiate between true and imaginary.\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s our imaginary Dragons that drag us down.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<p>If you would like my help in doing this, please let me know.<\/p>\n<p>Things I can help you with:<\/p>\n<p>Protocol Recovery Discussion<\/p>\n<p>Mastering incoming priorities versus distractions<\/p>\n<p>Creating contingency plans that support your overall goals (versus taking your away from your goals)<\/p>\n<p>Finding the proper place for everything.<\/p>\n<p>Incorporating, combining and blending the personal and business aspects of your life<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key reminder:<\/strong> You have time for everything that is important to you \u2013 maybe just not all at once.\u00a0 So you need to schedule time for the things that are really important to you \u2013 to make sure the unimportant distractions don\u2019t divert your attention away.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this\u00a0 discussion, I cover some quick tips for Work\/Life Balance.
