There\u2019s this acquaintance that is in a bit of a bind.\u00a0 He owes money and is facing legal action against him.\u00a0\u00a0 The simple solution is to start paying his friend back.\u00a0 The simple solution is to design and commit to a reasonable payment plan.\u00a0\u00a0 This solution has been offered to this person for over 1-year prior to setting the legal action.<\/p>\n
This person \u201csays\u201d he feels bad about owing the money.<\/p>\n
This person \u201csays\u201d he is sincere in paying back the money.<\/p>\n
This person \u201csays\u201d he can do this, that, this to collect the required money.<\/p>\n
He just doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
What is stopping this person from making progress?<\/p>\n
What is stopping him from being successful?<\/p>\n
He seems sincere.<\/p>\n
Well \u2013 he is waiting to make sure he can be successful before he takes action.<\/p>\n
At an early meeting, he said that he could collect $10,000 within 30 days by selling his car, truck, borrowing from family and friends, etc.\u00a0\u00a0 This $10,000 would go a long way in settling his debt and leaving the remaining amount to be covered in a reasonable payment plan.\u00a0 He was asked to sign a payment plan.\u00a0 At that time, he didn\u2019t feel confident that he could actually do it.\u00a0 So he refused to sign and proposed another meeting 2 weeks later (which he failed to attend).<\/p>\n
He finally responds to the numerous calls\/emails to schedule another meeting (this time 4 weeks out). He again fails to attend that meeting. \u00a0 He continues to postpone the cure for what ails him.<\/p>\n
A total of 8 weeks later \u2013 he is in the same boat.\u00a0 He has the same mental plan of where he could get the money, but doesn\u2019t feel confident enough to make it official.\u00a0 Signing this payment plan would stop a pending law suit.\u00a0 When asked, “What happened to his plan to collect the $10,000 within 30 days (now that 8 weeks have passed)?”<\/p>\n
\u201cWell \u2013 I didn\u2019t want to start collecting and paying it back until I\u00a0 officially signed the document.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThen, why didn\u2019t you sign that payment plan to make it official so that you can start paying it back?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t want to sign it until I was confident that I could do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Flawed Premise 1:\u00a0 I can’t start paying you because I haven’t\u00a0 signed payment schedule. There’s no special\u00a0 “starter pistol” that someone else triggers or controls\u00a0 for you.<\/p>\n You never need a “signed document” to do the right thing.\u00a0 In this example, everyone is in agreement that he owes the money.\u00a0 There’s no ambiguity on what needs to happen. \u00a0 The legal incentive\u00a0 came into the picture only because he wasn’t taking the responsibility for his debt seriously.<\/p>\n In the 8 weeks,\u00a0 he took no tangible\u00a0 steps to increase his confidence in his plan.\u00a0 He did not sell his car or truck.\u00a0 He did not talk to folks about the loans.\u00a0\u00a0 He just continued to avoid meetings and phone calls.<\/p>\n If he actually had followed through on the steps he proposed 8 weeks ago, he would have been able to return some amount of money and would have increased his confidence that he could can make the remaining payments.\u00a0 The lack of action did nothing to reduce his debt but did dramatically increase his stress.<\/p>\n Flawed Premise 2: I won’t\u00a0 sign this because I’m not 100% confident in it. You can never be 100% confident in a plan because the execution of that plan is in the future.<\/p>\n If you don’t know if this or that will work — EXPERIMENT<\/strong>.\u00a0 No one is born an expert. Experimentation and\u00a0 experiences produces experts.\u00a0 But sitting on one’s hands just keeps your hands warm and you in one place.<\/p>\n Every decision or plan you make is “doable” — as long as you do it.\u00a0 You can easily respond and react appropriate to what ever results you get.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The sooner you execute on your steps, the sooner you can get the results and be able to alter and modify with whatever unfolds.<\/p>\n If he had actually started on his plan (independent of whether he signed) he would have increased his confidence in his plan, reduced his debt and improved his reliability and\u00a0 integrity.<\/p>\n Flawed Premise 3:\u00a0 If I ignore it, it will go away.<\/strong><\/p>\n Don’t worry.\u00a0 If you don’t do anything about a problem, it will get bigger.\u00a0 Avoiding the phone calls and failure to appear at negotiation meetings just escalated the issue.\u00a0 Best to take responsibility for your actions.\u00a0 People can appreciate your situation, if they see tangible results and actions.\u00a0 If the gentleman had actually started a payment schedule (long before legal steps were taken),\u00a0 instead of empty promises and avoidance, he would have been in a much better situation.<\/p>\n Conclusion: <\/strong><\/p>\n Take an attitude of “progressive refinement” toward your projects.<\/p>\n Waiting to take action until your sure about the outcome of the action is a losing strategy.\u00a0\u00a0 You can never be 100% sure of the results, because the results are \u201cfuture based\u201d.\u00a0 Best recommendation is to actually experiment or do the activities that will increase your confidence in your decision.\u00a0 Once you start on your path (by doing the activities) you can always adjust and re-evaluate to stay on target.\u00a0 You will be constantly moving toward your target.<\/p>\n Take an attitude of “progressive refinement” on your project plans (fixing and refining as you go).\u00a0 Although strange things will occur during the journey, the solutions to those items will also appear along the same path.\u00a0 Therefore, you will be able to handle them along the way — as long as you start the journey.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Waiting to take action until your sure about the outcome of the action is a losing strategy.
