{"id":4701,"date":"2010-08-02T07:00:54","date_gmt":"2010-08-02T14:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=4701"},"modified":"2010-08-01T21:22:54","modified_gmt":"2010-08-02T04:22:54","slug":"social-media-coming-to-a-job-near-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=4701","title":{"rendered":"Social Media Coming to a Job Near You"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_4704\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4704\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/facebook2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4704  \" src=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/facebook2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4704\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">via Flickr by Franco Bouly<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fact #1: Facebook recently passed the 500 million-user mark (no I didn\u2019t accidentally add a zero).\u00a0 There are only ~900 million computer users in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Fact #2: The average amount of time the typical person spent on Facebook (7 hours, 1 minute per month) is more than Google (1:23), Yahoo (2:09), YouTube (1:02), Microsoft\/Bing (1:35), Wikipedia (0:15), and Amazon (0:22) combined!<\/p>\n<p>When I worked for Procter &amp; Gamble back in 1995, they were just starting to require that everyone use email.\u00a0 I remember there were a few managers that refused.\u00a0\u00a0 One person that sticks out in my memory was a woman who told everyone that instead of email, you should call or write a hand-written note and put it on her desk.\u00a0 She was proud of her refusal to adapt to the times.<\/p>\n<p>Email has transformed how people communicate at work, and I think we will see a similar transformation in the next decade.\u00a0 This time, Social Media will be the catalyst.\u00a0 It\u2019s already transformed how people interact with their friends.\u00a0 I used to shoot off email to communicate with my friends, update my photos on Flickr, and chat using Yahoo Messenger.\u00a0 Now, all of that activity is centered in one place &#8211; Facebook.\u00a0 It\u2019s more efficient and more engaging.<\/p>\n<p>To get a peek into the future and how we\u2019ll be communicating (and working), just look at how younger people are using technology today.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They don\u2019t like using email and prefer to text.<\/li>\n<li>They use their smart phones more than their computers.<\/li>\n<li>They aren\u2019t as worried about privacy and much more willing to make their news public.<\/li>\n<li>They love Social Networking sites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How do you think that these trends might affect the work that you do? \u00a0It may not right now, but when the next generation hits the work force, you better be ready to communicate using Social Media.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook has become the most popular internet site, but Social Networking hasn&#8217;t become mainstream at work.
