So here are some survival tips.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Know Your Goal \u2013 <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Before starting a project, decide      on a goal by taking input from your project team and the key      constituencies, i.e. people who are affected by your project.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Create a vision\/mission statement <\/span>that you can      share and reinforce you\u2019re your team.<\/li>\n<li>Throughout the project it will be      important to keep coming back to the goal and ensure you are not taking on      sub projects that are not in alignment with your end goal.<!--more--><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Know Your People<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Know thyself!<\/span> The first step in knowing how to manage people is to understand how      you work and what makes you effective as a project manager.<\/li>\n<li>Realize that not all team members      are the same; take the time to get to know the strengths and challenges of      your team members.\u00a0 This will enable      you to play to the strengths and minimize the challenges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Know Your Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do the up front work to analyze      the project from different angles.\u00a0      Understand the known risks (and how you might mitigate them) as      well as prepare for the unknown risks.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Recognize that you may be one of      the challenges<\/span>,      it is your job to help the team work effectively.\u00a0 This may mean you have to do soul      searching and adopt a different work style to attain success.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Find a Solution<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">There is no problem that can\u2019t be      overcome.\u00a0 Reach out to others      within your team, organization or network to brainstorm and determine next      steps.\u00a0 Don\u2019t Give Up! <\/span><\/li>\n<li>Remember:\u00a0 Nobody is born the perfect Project      Manager, constant growth, motivation and self reflection are required to      be effective.\u00a0 Every Project Manager      has felt exactly the way you feel now\u2026 elation, frustration,      determination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>You will Persevere!\u00a0 Enjoy the Journey.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rachel Phillips UCSC Extension Project Leadership and Communications Student Many of us are accidental project managers.
