{"id":3808,"date":"2010-02-10T13:52:53","date_gmt":"2010-02-10T20:52:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=3808"},"modified":"2010-02-10T13:52:53","modified_gmt":"2010-02-10T20:52:53","slug":"make-it-quick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=3808","title":{"rendered":"Make it Quick!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3810\" src=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/intro.bmp\" alt=\"intro\" width=\"112\" height=\"125\" \/>It didn\u2019t take long during my brief exchange with the DIVA to form a first impression; not long at all.\u00a0 In fact, according to Malcolm Gladwell, whenever we meet someone for the first time, we are able to size someone up in just<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> two<\/span> seconds \u2013 it\u2019s the power of our adaptive unconscious.\u00a0 In recognition of Malcolm Gladwell\u2019s book, <em>Blink:\u00a0 The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, <\/em>let\u2019s celebrate the power of the glance.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>When encountering someone for the first time, first impressions count.\u00a0 This is particularly true when networking with others\u2014you want to leave a positive, memorable impact when meeting others.\u00a0 Through observation and measurement you can improve your presence and connection \u2013 ideally to leverage the encounter for lasting value.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Think about your first contact with someone.\u00a0 Do you exhibit the following qualities to make you stand out and be remembered in a positive manner?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Confident:\u00a0 Do you inspire others?\u00a0 Do you speak in a sure way? Are you poised and level-headed?<\/li>\n<li>Credible:\u00a0 Do you have expertise and can you be trusted?\u00a0 Have often can you persuade others?<\/li>\n<li>Capable:\u00a0 Do you have what it takes to get the job done?\u00a0 Are you efficient, effective an expert in your field?<\/li>\n<li>Calm:\u00a0 Do you remain unruffled during turbulent times?\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Clean:\u00a0 Do you have a neat appearance?\u00a0 Can you speak in plain language; get right to the point, present fresh ideas?<\/li>\n<li>Charisma:\u00a0 Can you use your personal being, rather than speech or logic alone, to interact with others in a real and meaningful way?<\/li>\n<li>Connections:\u00a0 Do you establish lasting relationships?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Everything you do during the first 2 seconds of an interaction speaks volumes, especially your actions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you maintain direct eye contact during dialogue?<\/li>\n<li>What do you with your hands when you communicate?<\/li>\n<li>Do you face the other person in an \u201copen\u201d pose?<\/li>\n<li>Can you stand still?\u00a0 Do you jiggle your feet, your knee, or your leg?<\/li>\n<li>Are you aware of your facial expressions?<\/li>\n<li>How\u2019s the pitch of your voice?\u00a0 Do you speak clearly?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bring a buddy to the next networking event.\u00a0 Ask your pal to observe you from a distance\u2014solicit honest feedback when the event is over \u2013 How did you do?\u00a0 What did you do?\u00a0 Focus on a few improvement opportunities and try again, but make it quick.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa DiTullio, Principal, Lisa DiTullio &amp;
