{"id":3326,"date":"2009-11-02T06:29:11","date_gmt":"2009-11-02T13:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=3326"},"modified":"2019-08-07T14:30:06","modified_gmt":"2019-08-07T21:30:06","slug":"project-methodology-madness-and-confusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=3326","title":{"rendered":"Project Methodology Madness and Confusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I received a great question from a subscriber to my <a href=\"http:\/\/pmstudent.com\/pmp-guide\/\">PMP Guide newsletter<\/a> about methodologies and frameworks.<\/p>\n<p>He cited a bountiful list with a question of whether he needs to know all of these in and out:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adaptive Project Framework<\/li>\n<li>Agile software development<\/li>\n<li>XP<\/li>\n<li>FDD<\/li>\n<li>ITIL<\/li>\n<li>Lean Development<\/li>\n<li>Scrum<\/li>\n<li>Spiral<\/li>\n<li>10 Step<\/li>\n<li>JAD<\/li>\n<li>RAD<\/li>\n<li>RDD<\/li>\n<li>Crystal Method<\/li>\n<li>DSDM<\/li>\n<li>Waterfall<\/li>\n<li>SDLC<\/li>\n<li>Prince 2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3327\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3327\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3327\" title=\"confused\" src=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/confused.jpg\" alt=\"Confused - by utpal. via Flickr\" width=\"500\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/confused.jpg 500w, https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/confused-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3327\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Confused - by utpal. via Flickr<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While this list is a mixed bag of methodologies, frameworks, etc. my general advice is as follows to everyone who may be getting overwhelmed by the multitude of ways to \u201cget r dun\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>Be Purposeful About Your Career Path<\/h2>\n<div style=\"float: right;\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>I would not be too concerned about learning every methodology or system out there. \u00a0I certainly haven\u2019t looked into everything on this list. \u00a0There are a few I\u2019m pretty sure I\u2019ve never even heard of.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take a look around where you work now. \u00a0What is available to you as a possible move to gain experience? \u00a0What do they use? \u00a0If your short-term career milestone involves a particular methodology or framework, get to know it well. \u00a0Be curious. \u00a0If they have documentation, read it. \u00a0Ask to volunteer your free time (unpaid) to help them. \u00a0Your pay is the learning and networking opportunities. \u00a0You may also get a great mentor out of it.<\/li>\n<li>Take a look at the company or department you work in or WANT to work in 2-5 years in the future. Ask what they use and learn that. There are general project management principles that will apply more broadly, but depending on each individual implementation things change.<\/li>\n<li>Alternatively, learn just a little about some of these and pick one that you find really interesting. Go after deeper knowledge about that one. \u00a0By becoming well versed in a specific way of doing projects (that you really enjoy) you can enter a niche in the job market you are really passionate about. \u00a0Once you learn one, it\u2019s easier to learn others later on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I hope that helps!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Share your insights with the community
