{"id":3123,"date":"2009-09-24T18:19:02","date_gmt":"2009-09-25T01:19:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=3123"},"modified":"2019-08-07T14:30:29","modified_gmt":"2019-08-07T21:30:29","slug":"lead-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=3123","title":{"rendered":"LEAD On!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3126\" src=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/ArrowLeader-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"ArrowLeader\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>I don\u2019t believe leadership is about your accomplishments or credentials.\u00a0 It\u2019s about your presence.\u00a0 It\u2019s what\u2019s inside that makes you stand out.\u00a0 Leadership is often defined by how others view you.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not easy to be an effective leader.\u00a0 You know you have experience and knowledge \u2013 others see it as arrogance.\u00a0 You think you are contributing in a real and meaningful way \u2013 others see it as butting in.\u00a0 You think you are enabling others \u2013 others see you as ignoring them.\u00a0 You just can\u2019t win.<\/p>\n<p>Leadership does not need to be complex or complicated to be effective.\u00a0 In fact, when you keep your leadership practices simple, you are more apt to practice them on a daily basis.\u00a0 You can effectively LEAD with four strategies:\u00a0 Listen, Encourage, Act, and Delegate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen:<\/strong> When was the last time you really heard what was being said?\u00a0 The next time one of your project teammates approaches you with an issue, stop everything you are doing, tune out all distractions, and give him\/her your undivided attention.\u00a0 Listen fully; don\u2019t finish his\/her sentences; never say \u201cI knew that.\u201d\u00a0 Don\u2019t use \u201cno\u201d, \u201cbut\u201d or \u201chowever\u201d; if you are preparing a response in your head as someone else is talking, you have effectively tuned him\/her out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Encourage:<\/strong> We all need positive reinforcement, it is human nature.\u00a0 Yet, as a leader, when was the last time you offered genuine encouragement to someone?\u00a0 Small words of encouragement go a long way.\u00a0 Simple words are authentic; they represent true feelings, exhibit sincerity.\u00a0 When was the last time you said \u201cPlease\u201d when asking someone to do something for your or the project?\u00a0 Did you exhibit gratitude by saying \u201cThank you?\u201d\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget \u201cI\u2019m sorry\u201d when you screw up or admit \u201cI don\u2019t know\u201d when you don\u2019t have the answer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Act:<\/strong> Effective leaders must define and state their expectations.\u00a0 Do your teammates know what you expect of them?\u00a0 How do you want the team to operate?\u00a0 How will individuals be held accountable?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Delegate:<\/strong> Delegation is not about dumping the work you don\u2019t want to do on to others; it\u2019s about involving everyone on your team.\u00a0 When we under delegate, we under-tap our resources.\u00a0 When we over delegate, we overburden others.\u00a0 Purposely delegate at every meeting; delegate with clear expectations.\u00a0 Delegate across your constituency; leverage economies of scale, don\u2019t play favorites.<\/p>\n<p>So, listen more, talk less.\u00a0 Remember that positive reinforcement keeps people engaged.\u00a0 Always act in an honorable and open way;
