{"id":2937,"date":"2009-08-11T10:17:54","date_gmt":"2009-08-11T17:17:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=2937"},"modified":"2019-08-07T14:30:49","modified_gmt":"2019-08-07T21:30:49","slug":"are-you-a-member-of-the-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=2937","title":{"rendered":"Are You a Member of the Team?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2938\" src=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/football_goal-144x110-custom.gif\" alt=\"football_goal\" width=\"144\" height=\"110\" \/>My 15-year old had knee surgery yesterday; it was his 2<sup>nd<\/sup> surgery in three months.\u00a0\u00a0The first procedure was performed on his left knee in May, yesterday his surgeon repaired his right knee.\u00a0 Prior to surgery, he endured much pain and many hours of physical therapy \u2013 he has many more months of rehabilitation ahead of him.\u00a0 Why go through this at such an early age?\u00a0 To be a part of the team\u2026<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->I am the parent of a teenager who desperately wants to be a member of the team \u2013 he is a football and lacrosse player who spent last year on the sidelines.\u00a0 Unfit for play, he suited up each and every game last season to support and cheer his teammates.\u00a0 As I waited for his surgeon to complete the procedure yesterday, I pondered the irony of it all.\u00a0 My son hungers for team membership and yet I speak to professionals who lament to me about \u201cbad\u201d team experiences.\u00a0 How and why does the divide occur?<\/p>\n<p>The benefits of team membership are strong, regardless of team type or size. \u00a0No matter what age, we all reap the same opportunities through teams.\u00a0 Team participation keeps us active, gives us an opportunity to socialize, and enables us to unify around a common goal.\u00a0 The advantages of team involvement are many and the benefits are not limited to team members.\u00a0 Benefactors include individual team members, the group as a whole, the entity who has a vested interest in the team\u2019s success, and the customers.\u00a0 Team success requires dedication of time, energy, and a strong belief in the team\u2019s ability to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0All teams can become more successful by following four simple steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Define the Team:<\/strong>\u00a0 Know <em>what <\/em>you need, not <em>who<\/em> you need.\u00a0 Skill set, subject matter expertise, functional knowledge, and specialized experience must guide the selection process.\u00a0 A candidate\u2019s ability to perform in a team setting must also be assessed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clarify Team Goals:<\/strong>\u00a0 Make sure everyone on the team knows the team\u2019s goals and each member of the team has defined roles and responsibilities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Identify Supporting Behaviors:<\/strong>\u00a0 Identify specific actions and behavioral characteristics that will best support team goals and establish a team environment.\u00a0 Establish operating practices that allow everyone to be equally committed to a common purpose, set of goals, and working approach.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Establish Accountability:<\/strong>\u00a0 Discuss and decide how you and others on your team will be held accountable to team expectations.\u00a0 Ideally, accountability is both individual and shared; effectiveness is measured by the group\u2019s collective outcomes and products.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>No matter what recipe you follow to create team success, there is one required ingredient:\u00a0 You must <em>want<\/em> to be a member of the team.\u00a0 As the great Vince Lombardi said, \u201cIndividual commitment to a group effort-that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Just ask my son, Geoff.
