{"id":221,"date":"2007-02-25T19:21:53","date_gmt":"2007-02-25T19:21:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=221"},"modified":"2019-08-07T14:39:33","modified_gmt":"2019-08-07T21:39:33","slug":"invest-now-or-pay-later","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=221","title":{"rendered":"Invest Now or Pay Later?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"96\" alt=\"investment steps\" src=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/02\/step_sponsor-web.thumbnail.jpg\" \/>The payment is project failure.\u00a0 The investment is effective project sponsorship.\u00a0 Successful project managers invest in managing their sponsors: they avoid becoming victim to bad situations by proactively eliciting the support they need.<\/p>\n<p>Examples abound about how project managers manage upwards.\u00a0<!--more-->\u00a0Sell the features to upper managers about their roles as sponsors.\u00a0 Emphasize the value of sponsorship and the advantages that accrue to business when it is done well.\u00a0 Ask your sponsors what they know and what they do not know about the projects they are involved in.\u00a0 This is not meant to reveal ignorance but to get their attention.\u00a0 Ask for the order:\u00a0 get executive commitment.\u00a0 Establish agreements about next steps (action plan).<\/p>\n<p>Emphasize the rewards for project sponsorship:<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2An improved standing and profile within the organization: \u00a0important projects may empower project sponsors to success (but also may destroy them in case of failure)<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2Being linked with an exciting and very successful project:\u00a0 exciting projects have high visibility in organizations<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2Marketing potential for the project sponsor (image selling):\u00a0 assigned to the project because of professional background and prestige<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2Media opportunities at official launches, presentation evenings, and mentions in local newsletters or news:\u00a0 that means greater popularity<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2Get their agenda implemented:\u00a0 sponsorship represents an opportunity to turn a vision into reality through a set of assigned resources<\/p>\n<p>The ideal situation is proactive sponsorship: getting a project sponsor who is committed, accountable, and serious about the project, knowledgeable, trained, and able not only to talk the talk but also to walk the walk. \u00a0Such people are trustworthy in all respects. \u00a0Their values are transparent and aligned with the organization and its strategy. \u00a0Such sponsors protect the team from disruptive outside influences and back the team up when times are tough. \u00a0It is far better to start out with the right sponsor than having to correct a bad sponsorship situation down the road. \u00a0That is why it is so important to select the right sponsor and train the person for the role. \u00a0An organizational culture committed to this approach is a desired goal. \u00a0It represents a well-developed, mature organization. \u00a0Do it right the first time and save yourself grief later on. \u00a0The best way to sustain good sponsorship is to start out with good sponsorship. \u00a0Anything less is remedial.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"workshop description\" href=\"http:\/\/englundpmc.com\/events_page.htm\">Creating excellence in project management<\/a> includes managing the sponsor role.\u00a0 Sponsor activities and behaviors vary with the organization. \u00a0The lack of good project sponsorship is a major case of difficulties and problems on projects. \u00a0Well-executed sponsorship by senior executives brings better project results.\u00a0 Be part of a team to make this happen.<\/p>\n<p>Adapted from <strong><em><a title=\"order book from Amazon.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0787981362\/creatinganenv-20\">Project Sponsorship:\u00a0 Achieving Management Commitment for Project Success<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>by Englund and Bucero.<br \/>\n&#8211;
