1. \u00a0Provide Common Vision<\/h4>\n

What was your best work experience<\/a>? \u00a0If you’re like most people, it was a time when you were working with others\u00a0on a clear, shared<\/em>, achievable<\/em> goal. \u00a0Commit yourself to creating these\u00a0experiences for your teams.<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0Self-Delusion Will Interfere With Your Best Efforts<\/h4>\n

If you don’t know where you are weak as a project manager, you will likely continue to make the same mistakes<\/a>. \u00a0What mechanisms do you have in place for getting honest feedback? \u00a0Most of us will not get this kind of information unless we figure out ways to make it safe for others to give. \u00a0It’s up to you to create a team where such risk taking is welcomed and rewarded.<\/p>\n

Get in the habit of asking, “How could this document, meeting or plan be improved?” or “What would you have done differently?”.<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0Two PMs are better than One<\/h4>\n

If you’re a good project manager,\u00a0it\u2019s easy to start thinking that your way is\u00a0best. \u00a0In reality there are as many\u00a0styles as there are PMs. Try to befriend successful project managers who conduct themselves\u00a0differently than you. \u00a0You’ll learn more than you think.<\/p>\n

4. \u00a0Team Conflict is Neither Good Nor Bad<\/h4>\n

The question is not whether there is conflict, but what happens to it. \u00a0IT people tend not to like open expression of conflict. \u00a0The tendency is to cut it off or press it underground. \u00a0The result: gossip and festering.<\/p>\n

How can you bring out the conflict on your team in a way that it can be expressed and resolved? \u00a0When you are able to do this well, you will be well on your way to having great team relationships<\/a> and excellent project results.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0 Company Culture Is Real<\/h4>\n

Dilbert<\/a>, Office Space<\/a> and The Office<\/a> resonate with people for good reason. \u00a0If you can figure out how your company’s culture is part of the problem, and identify ways to deal with this, you’ll be far ahead in the game.<\/p>\n

6. \u00a0Unexpected Change Destabilizes People<\/h4>\n

In times of uncertainty, more time will be spent discussing bleak possibilities than working on your project. \u00a0If your team knows (a) you get good information and (b) you share it with them, then they’ll be productive even when the ground under them is shaking wildly.<\/p>\n
