The Credit Crisis: For Project Managers &#8211; What should you Expect?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"left\" alt=\"Change\" src=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/change.thumbnail.jpg\" \/>Should you find yourself in a chronically leaking boat, energy devoted to changing vessels is likely to be more productive than energy devoted to patching leaks. &#8211; Warren Buffett<\/p>\n<p>There is no point in denying that change is in the air.\u00a0 You can prepare yourself so that you&#8217;re in the best position where you are, but that is a short term outlook.\u00a0 You also want to think about the business where you are and the environment it operates in.\u00a0 How will that business and environment be effected by a recession?\u00a0 Those are the long term questions to ask.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This is part 4 of 4 looking at the credit crisis:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/2008\/10\/13\/1-the-credit-crisis-what-does-it-mean-for-you-and-your-company\/\">The Credit Crisis: What Does it Mean for You and Your Company?<\/a> &#8211; This will look at what&#8217;s currently happening and what it means.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/2008\/10\/14\/2-the-credit-crisis-why-is-it-important-a-little-history\/\">The Credit Crisis: Why It Is Important? &#8211; A Little History<\/a> &#8211; To get some context, we&#8217;ll look at why companies were set up and why investors, like Carl Icahn are so outraged.\u00a0 Understanding this is important to recognizing good opportunities.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/2008\/10\/15\/3-the-credit-crisis-for-project-managers-what-does-it-mean\/\">The Credit Crisis: For Project Managers &#8211; What Does It Mean?<\/a> &#8211; What are some things as project managers you should be doing.<\/li>\n<li>The Credit Crisis: For Project Managers &#8211; What should you Expect? &#8211; What are things to look for and think about.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What are you looking for?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Would you like to travel and experience new cultures?<\/li>\n<li>Is job security critical to you?<\/li>\n<li>Do you need to stay in a particular location?<\/li>\n<li>What are your financial needs (not wants)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Are the answers aligned with your current job?<\/p>\n<p>If you are looking to travel and experience different cultures, this is an excellent time to do so.\u00a0 The sun always shines somewhere.\u00a0 Dubai is booming, Singapore and Hong Kong are growing and for people with skills, China is growing.\u00a0 This is an excellent time to explore opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>If job security is critical to you, look at the business and it&#8217;s environment.\u00a0 Is the overall environment secure? Growing? Filled with competitors?\u00a0 Much as we&#8217;d like to believe our own individual abilities will trump these things, you&#8217;ll swim much faster with the current than fighting against it.<\/p>\n<p>Do you need to stay in a particular location?\u00a0 Then find the businesses doing the best in that location.\u00a0 Cultivate relationships with people in those businesses.\u00a0 Join a PMI chapter, Toastmasters, some other professional group or the Rotary Club.\u00a0 All these organizations are designed to help you network.\u00a0 Network yourself into the best positioned company where you want to be.<\/p>\n<p>What are your financial needs?\u00a0 Know what your monthly expenses are and make a budget.\u00a0 You are as independent as you are financially independent.\u00a0 You can make yourself financially independent.\u00a0 This change has made everyone think about tightening their belt, take advantage and fill your bank account too.<\/p>\n<p>Know what your requirements are and think where you&#8217;ll want to be in three to five years.\u00a0 No one knows how long the credit crisis will last or the economic slowdown or the recession or whatever you want to call it.\u00a0 However, it&#8217;s a good bet that if you make plans that get you where you want to be three to five years from now and you execute them (you are a project manager, right?), you will succeed, how ever long the bad times last.<\/p>\n<p>Think.<\/p>\n<p><em>About the Author <\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"left\" alt=\"AndrewMeyer\" src=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/andymeyer.thumbnail.JPG\" \/>Andrew Meyer studied systems and industrial engineering before spending fifteen years implementing global IT and Business Process Re-Engineering projects.
