{"id":13074,"date":"2014-10-27T01:53:28","date_gmt":"2014-10-27T08:53:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=13074"},"modified":"2014-09-30T08:38:45","modified_gmt":"2014-09-30T15:38:45","slug":"whats-job-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=13074","title":{"rendered":"What\u2019s in a job title?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello, this is Laura Lee Rose. \u00a0I am a speaker and author.\u00a0 I am an expert in time and project management.<\/p>\n<p>I help busy professionals and entrepreneurs create effective systems so that they can comfortably delegate to others, be more profitable and have time to enjoy life even if they don\u2019t have time to learn new technology or train their staff.\u00a0 I have a knack for turning big ideas into on time and profitable projects.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, I give people peace of mind.<br \/>\nToday\u2019s question came from a busy professional interested in freeing some time and space to advance in his career.<\/p>\n<p><i><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jobtitle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-13076\" style=\"margin-left: 15px;margin-right: 15px\" alt=\"jobtitle\" src=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jobtitle-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>What\u2019s in a job title?\u00a0 How does one pick the appropriate job title?\u00a0 What does a title say about us?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>A rose given any other name still smells as sweet.\u00a0 So \u2013 what\u2019s in a job title anyway?\u00a0 How important is it?<\/p>\n<p>If you had asked me this question several years ago, my answer would be very different.\u00a0 My answer would probably center on individual prestige or associated with the number of years and experience associated with a particular job role or responsibility.\u00a0 Today, my recommendations lean toward looking at what we are trying to accomplish with that title.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I would go back to the company\u2019s goal or the directive.\u00a0 If \u2013 for instance, your job is to influence high-profile, high-paying client \u2013 then your job title needs to be prestigious enough to warrant their time and attention.<\/p>\n<p>A high-profile client may schedule time with a Director of Research versus a Software Engineer.\u00a0\u00a0 But having the owner of the company be the one to install the product at their test lab \u2013 may have the opposite effect.\u00a0 It may put unwanted exposure that you are a one-man show versus a long-established company.\u00a0 In that situation, you might want to underscore your founder\/owner status and just state that you are here to install their new software.<\/p>\n<p>An unhappy customer may feel better heard if the Customer Advocacy Manager is working with them, versus Tech Support Staff (even though the Tech Support person is handling all the customer advocacy issues).<\/p>\n<p>The audit team might feel better talking to your Division Audit Officer versus your QE Manager (even though the QE Manager is also the one handling all the Audit and Process issues).<\/p>\n<p>Since business cards are inexpensive and you can create your own, having several cards with different titles is useful.\u00a0 To avoid fumbling through which card to give out \u2013 have your goal and purpose in mind before the networking event or meeting.\u00a0 Then only bring those cards to the event.<\/p>\n<p>So, in general \u2013 my recommendation is to directly associate the job title that will make it easier to achieve the results that you want.\u00a0 Don\u2019t focus on the \u201cyears of experience\u201d or \u201cconventional title hierarchy\u201d.\u00a0 Get creative in your job titles \u2013 and focus on what you really want to achieve with them.<\/p>\n<p>If your target client values creativity and innovativeness, get creative with your titles.\u00a0 If your target client is more procedural and strategic, then more conventional titles would appeal to them.\u00a0 Focus on the goals and what would attract the target clients.<\/p>\n<p>I know your situation is different.
