This week\u2019s topic was \u201cAdvice for people who want to do a 180\u00b0 career change\u201d<\/p>\n

What steps do you take to succeed?<\/p>\n

Very rarely is that 180\u00b0 degree career change.\u00a0 Even when you think you are doing a complete change in careers, you carry with you a set of transferable skills that translate nicely into the next new chapter of your life.\u00a0 The recommendation is to highlight those shared traits and illustrate how they were the foundations of your next step.\u00a0 Don\u2019t highlight the differences in your career choices.\u00a0 Instead highlight the similarities.\u00a0 Make them understand that this \u201cnew career\u201d is the natural next logical step in your advancement (not something totally new).<\/p>\n

Some examples of transferable skills can be (but not limited to):<\/p>\n

  2. Multitasking<\/li>\n
  3. Project management<\/li>\n
  4. Customer Service and Satisfaction<\/li>\n
  5. Customer Advocacy<\/li>\n
  6. Writing\/Editing<\/li>\n
  7. Creating\/Innovation<\/li>\n
  8. Process Improvement \u2013 Quality Assurance<\/li>\n
  9. Detail oriented<\/li>\n
  10. Problem Solving<\/li>\n
  11. Solution oriented<\/li>\n
  12. Time management<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Even a pastry chef and a surgeon (careers you may feel have nothing in common) will have transferable skills in common.\u00a0 It is the transferable skills that make us excel in a multitude of environments.<\/p>\n

    What\u2019s the first step in transitioning into a different career?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    One recommendation is to start building your Press Kit or portfolio on your new career now, when you are still in your current career.\u00a0 The assumption is that you are already following your passions in the form of a side-job or hobby.\u00a0 Take that hobby to the next step.<\/p>\n

    For instance, what if your new \u2018wish list\u2019 career is that pastry chef?\u00a0 Chances are that you are already baking for your family and friends.\u00a0 You are already conducting catering service for your community of followers.\u00a0 There are several steps you can take, while you are still in your current career.<\/p>\n

    1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Take pictures and video of your pastry and catering events.<\/p>\n

    2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Create your pastry website, logo and brand<\/p>\n

    3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Create your brochures and business cards<\/p>\n

    4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Collect testimonials from friends, family and your community<\/p>\n

    5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Create your facebook and linkedin social media pages<\/p>\n

    6)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Take culinary classes in your desired wish list career<\/p>\n

    7)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Start blogging and send out social media posting that illustrate your expertise<\/p>\n

    8)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Publicize that you are available for catering events<\/p>\n

    9)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Collaborate with other entrepreneurs and offer to cater their catalyst events<\/p>\n

    10) Give your pastry as appreciation gifts at your office<\/p>\n

    11) Offer to cater the office parties and meetings<\/p>\n

    12) Create your pastry business plan<\/p>\n

    13) Create a resume based on your graphics experience and client testimonials<\/p>\n

    The goal is to start building and collecting the proper experience and resume, while you are still in your current career.<\/p>\n

    What if you are current a teacher\u2019s assistant and you want to break into graphic design.<\/p>\n
