{"id":13014,"date":"2014-02-12T08:44:18","date_gmt":"2014-02-12T15:44:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=13014"},"modified":"2019-08-11T00:45:28","modified_gmt":"2019-08-11T07:45:28","slug":"7-public-speaking-tips-introverts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=13014","title":{"rendered":"7 Public Speaking Tips for Introverts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lauraleerose.com\/time-management\/7-public-speaking-tips-introverts\/attachment\/speaking\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2673\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lauraleerose.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Speaking-150x150.png\" alt=\"Speaking\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Hello, this is Laura Lee Rose \u2013 author of the business and time management books <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lauraleerose.com\/timepeace-making-peace-time-2\/\">TimePeace: Making peace with time<\/a>\u00a0 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lauraleerose.com\/book-answers\/\">The Book of Answers: 105 Career Critical Situations<\/a>\u2013 and I am a business and efficiency coach that specializes in time management, project management and work-life balance strategies.<\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s topic was \u201cPublic speaking tips for introverts\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>7 public speaking tips for introverts<\/b><\/p>\n<p>As we rise up the corporate ladder, public speaking (whether in the form of presentations, proposals or seminars) becomes a large part of our advancement.\u00a0 It helps us build our reputation, credentials and professionalism.\u00a0 As our career develops, our professionalism and talent needs to become more public; therefore, public speaking will become a part of the job.<br \/>\nEven though public speaking is important to any career advancement, many are uncomfortable in front on an audience.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some quick tips:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Consider ToastMasters to improve your public speaking.\u00a0 It\u2019s a unintimidating environment filled with people with the same goals.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Talk about things you are passionate and know about.\u00a0 Everyone is excited to talk about their passions and experiences.<\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Practice, practice, practice.\u00a0 Take every opportunity to stretch yourself.\u00a0 At every interaction, make it a goal to tell one story to a stranger or group (just one story).<\/p>\n<p>4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Think positive. Visualize the speech several times before you actually make it.\u00a0 Screenplay it exactly has you want it to go.\u00a0 While you are speaking, pretend that you are someone else.\u00a0 Channel one of your role models and give the speech as he\/she would do it.<\/p>\n<p>5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Everyone understands how difficult it is to speak in front of groups.\u00a0 They appreciate what it takes to get up there and want you to succeed. Acknowledge that everyone in the audience is on your side.<\/p>\n<p>6)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Another thing that helps is to use your speech to speak well of someone else.\u00a0 Sometimes it is easier to speak of someone else\u2019s\u2019 endeavors and accomplishments because you are placing the spotlight on them (instead of on yourself).<\/p>\n<p>7)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Use a familiar prop.\u00a0 Sometimes a prop helps with nerves because some of your attention is focused away from the audience and onto the prop.\u00a0 Creating \u201chow to\u201d speeches or presentation is an easy way for introverts to ease into public speaking.\u00a0 Make sure you know \u201chow to\u201d do that item.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s cover some of these tips in more detail.<\/p>\n<p>Talk about things you are passionate and know about. Talk about things you know all about.\u00a0 Start with some \u201chow-to\u201d presentations or items that you are the resident expert.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid the \u201caudience know-it-all\u201d, talk about your experience.\u00a0 If someone disagrees with your opinion, all you have to do is say, \u201cWell, this has been my experience.\u00a0 Your results may vary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If\/When you don\u2019t know the answer, use that opportunity to business network.\u00a0 Say, \u201cI don\u2019t know, but I am also interested in the answer.\u00a0 I\u2019ll look into that.\u00a0 If you can leave your business card or contact information, I\u2019ll find out and will get back to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Practice, Practice, Practice.\u00a0 In this day and age, there is no reason not to practice.\u00a0 Most laptops, Ipads, tablet, iphone has camera\/video options. \u00a0Film your speaking engagements; setup weekly BlogTalkRadio episodes, give webinar presentation, setup Brown Bag Lunch session at the office; offer to speak at your professional organization or business networking meetings.\u00a0 There is an unlimited number of ways to practice.<\/p>\n<p>Use props such as PowerPoint slides, short video, cartoon, joke, white board, chalk board, demo software, or a visual aide to illustrate a point or metaphor.\u00a0 This allows you distract yourself away from the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Focus on someone else\u2019s accomplishments and achievement in your speech.\u00a0 By focusing your attention on your admiration on someone else, you forget about yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Pick one or two faces in the audience and talk directly to them.\u00a0 Pretend that they are new friends and you are just explaining your topic to them.\u00a0 Everyone in the audience is already interested in your topic (otherwise they would not be there).\u00a0 So there are already tuned-in and supporting.<\/p>\n<p>Just relax and breathe.\u00a0 Everyone is already one your side in this.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udemy.com\/it-professional-development-toolkit\/\">Professional Development Toolkit<\/a>, I go into the: who, what, where, when and how to accomplish all of the above.
