{"id":11110,"date":"2013-03-29T08:26:30","date_gmt":"2013-03-29T15:26:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=11110"},"modified":"2013-03-25T14:50:28","modified_gmt":"2013-03-25T21:50:28","slug":"what-we-can-learn-from-judge-judy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=11110","title":{"rendered":"What we can learn from Judge Judy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Igniting the FuseFULL\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lauraleerose.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Igniting-the-FuseFULL-300x153.jpg\" width=\"549\" height=\"207\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\">May 15-17, 2013<\/h2>\n<h4>Feel stuck?<br \/>\nWant to start that next chapter?<br \/>\nWant to get out of your own way?<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Your friend, Laura Rose, business and efficiency coach, is hosting a free online summit called: <a href=\"http:\/\/lightyourfuse.eventbrite.com\" target=\"_blank\"><b><i>Light Your Fuse<\/i><\/b><\/a>Find out more at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lauraleerose.com\/light-your-fuse-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.lauraleerose.com\/light-your-fuse-summit\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The most misquoted verse in the Bible is probably Matthew 7:1, \u201cJudge not that ye be not judged.\u201d<br \/>\nIt\u2019s impossible <strong>not<\/strong> to judge.\u00a0 Telling someone else\u00a0 \u201cnot to judge\u201d \u2014 shows you have made the judgment that they are judging.\u00a0 Most opinions, descriptions, decisions, views, rulings, and critiques are judgments.<br \/>\nIn the workplace, performance review and evaluations are judgments on both subjective and objective criteria.\u00a0 Business decisions are based on market comparisons and our judgment on ROI (Return On Investments).\u00a0 Project management schedules and delivery schedules are based on group opinions and past performance trends.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure when \u2018judging\u2019 attracted such a negative connotation.\u00a0 But we can\u2019t take inspired action without allowing some level of judgment within us and others.<\/p>\n<p>The key is to judge righteously and appropriately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreat!\u00a0 So how does one go about judging appropriately?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>In my <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vconferenceonline.com\/autovip.asp?vip=SPGTA&amp;m=%21%21memberid%21%21\" target=\"_blank\">GoTo Academy: Soft Skill Tools for the GoTo Professional<\/a><em> continuous online coaching series, I go into these things in detail.<\/em><em><br \/>\n<\/em><em>If you are interested in more training in these areas, <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vconferenceonline.com\/autovip.asp?vip=SPGTA&amp;m=%21%21memberid%21%21\" target=\"_blank\">please sign-up for the continuing online coaching series<\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here are a few things to consider, when making a ruling (or judgment):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be self-aware of any hidden agenda or expectations.<\/li>\n<li>Use accurate data from multiple sources<\/li>\n<li>Be wary of ambiguous and vague descriptions (indicators of innuendos, rumors and assumptions).<\/li>\n<li>Disengage from the results (have no hidden agenda or expectations)<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t take anything personally<\/li>\n<li>Give everyone the benefit of the doubt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The above steps seem simple enough, but how would we incorporate in the real-world?\u00a0 Below are some common professional situations:<\/p>\n<p>In my on-line coaching series, we use some typical employee complaints and frustrations.\u00a0 Please add your frustrations to this list for practice.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My manager is not a people person.<\/li>\n<li>My manager has never learned people skills.<\/li>\n<li>My manager avoids confrontation at all costs.<\/li>\n<li>My manager is showing favoritism.<\/li>\n<li>My manager doesn\u2019t like me.<\/li>\n<li>My coworker is a racist and is lying about me.<\/li>\n<li>My coworker is getting paid more than I am, and I\u2019m doing more work than he\/she.<\/li>\n<li>My coworker is always submitting buggy code and it the reason my piece is late.<\/li>\n<li>This company expects me to work 24\/7.<\/li>\n<li>This company won\u2019t give promotions or any type of recognition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Be self-aware of any hidden agenda or expectations.<\/strong><br \/>\nMost of the above examples have a hidden agenda.\u00a0 The \u2018finger\u2019 is consistently pointing to someone else. Maybe you know the saying, \u201cWhen you <strong>point one finger<\/strong>, there are <strong>three<\/strong> fingers pointing back.\u00a0\u00a0 And this is the case in these examples. We create our own situations (good and bad).<br \/>\nRegardless of the specific incident, you have contributed to your current situation.\u00a0 While blaming someone else provides some limited relief, it doesn\u2019t really release you from your responsibility (your ability to respond).<br \/>\nReview your higher-level mission and what you can do to set things right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could I have handled this differently? What can I do right now that illustrates my expert people-skills, my social skills, and my ease in handling conflicts and confrontations? This incident doesn\u2019t depend on my manager\u2019s people and social skills. This incident depends upon my expert people and social skills. My professional reputation is my responsibility, not my manager\u2019s responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be wary of ambiguous and vague descriptions (indicators of innuendos, rumors and assumptions).<\/strong><br \/>\nAmbiguity leaves the door open for innuendos, imagination and assumptions.\u00a0 When you are use words like: never, always, mostly, chances are that you don\u2019t really have your facts together.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use accurate data from multiple sources<\/strong><br \/>\nAs you gather your accurate data, validate it across multiple sources.\u00a0 Remember that each source may have their own agenda or personal perspective.\u00a0 Relying on one or two sources with the same personal agenda<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disengage from the results (have no hidden agenda or expectations)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you are collecting the data, disengage from the results.\u00a0 When you have an idea of what you want the answer to be, you will often collect data that supports your expectations.\u00a0 If you enter into the discovery phase with no expectations and an open mind, you are more likely to make appropriate judgments.<\/p>\n<p><em>In my <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vconferenceonline.com\/autovip.asp?vip=SPGTA&amp;m=%21%21memberid%21%21\" target=\"_blank\">GoTo Academy: Soft Skill Tools for the GoTo Professional<\/a><em> continuous online coaching series, I go into these things in detail.<\/em><em><br \/>\n<\/em><em>If you are interested in more training in these areas, <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vconferenceonline.com\/autovip.asp?vip=SPGTA&amp;m=%21%21memberid%21%21\" target=\"_blank\">please sign-up for the continuing online coaching series<\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s impossible not to judge.
