{"id":11091,"date":"2013-03-25T08:04:53","date_gmt":"2013-03-25T15:04:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=11091"},"modified":"2013-03-25T14:48:47","modified_gmt":"2013-03-25T21:48:47","slug":"pro-and-con-list-to-make-better-decisions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=11091","title":{"rendered":"Pro and Con list to make better decisions."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/pro-and-con-list-to-make-better-decisions\/checklist3\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11092\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11092\" src=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/checklist3.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/checklist3.gif 192w, https:\/\/svapm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/checklist3-150x150.gif 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/a>Most everyone is familiar with Pro and Con lists to help make a decision.\u00a0 Often times the Pro and Con List does very little to clarify the decision \u2013 because \u2013 well \u2013 the reason you are creating the Pro\/Con list is because it was a \u2018close call\u2019 to begin with.\u00a0 We don\u2019t go to the trouble of making a Pro and Con list on \u2018no-brainers\u2019.\u00a0 Often times the pro and cons are pretty equal \u2013 making the decision still difficult.\u00a0 Our mistake is that we stop at this point.\u00a0 We don\u2019t take the next step to reduce the impact of the \u201cCons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Use the Pro\/Con\/What if table instead.\u00a0 List your Pros and Cons (like you would normally), then add a \u201cWhat if\u201d or \u201cWhat needs to happen to reduce your discomfort of the Con\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 Once you have your matrix filled out, and then determine the probability and impact of each.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t think of any way to reduce the impact of the \u2018Con\u2019 \u2013 that adds clarity.\u00a0 But most of the time we don\u2019t take that step to think of things to improve your position.<\/p>\n<p>Take the below example between a current job and a new job.\u00a0 Once you have identified the \u201cWhat Needs To Happen\u201d \u2013 have a transparent and collaborative discussion with the hiring managers to see what is possible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\"><strong>Pros<\/strong><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\"><strong>Cons<\/strong><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\"><strong>What needs to happen to \u00a0reduce discomfort of the Con<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"3\" valign=\"top\" width=\"798\">\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Job 1 &#8211; current<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">Enjoy the people and type of work<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">$45\/hr &#8211; underpaid<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">Request $60-65\/hour raise<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">Analytical, model and mathematical work that I enjoy<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">Don\u2019t have enough money to do much.<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">Ask if there\u2019s an opportunity to get paid for your articles, inventions and publications on your findings (in addition to the hourly rate)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">Opportunity to set a standard and make a name for myself in this area<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">Can\u2019t enjoy my free time very much.<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">Ask if there are any other things you can do for separate and added pay (i.e. referrals, sales leads, promote at trade shows, explicit things that will make the business money)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">Opportunity to present papers on discoveries<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">Can\u2019t comfortably support my family obligations<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">Find an alternative\/added revenue stream (in addition to this hourly rate) external to this company.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">Opportunity to define processes and lead policies<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\"><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"3\" valign=\"top\" width=\"798\">\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Job 2 \u2013 new opportunity<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">$85\/hour<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">Don\u2019t know the folks. Will be working in isolation (not in a team).<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">I work well both in a team and in isolation.\u00a0\u00a0 I can create opportunities to share my knowledge with co-workers through group discussions, lunch meetings, etc.\u00a0 I can build working relationships outside of my specific task.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">Easy work<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">Have to accept without reading\/signing a contract.\u00a0 They want to know if I will accept before going to the trouble of a contract.\u00a0 After I accept, I get a written contract to review and sign.\u00a0 My fear is that after I accept and resign from other job\u2014I find something in the contract that is not acceptable.<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"266\">If I want, I can accept job \u2018now\u2019, with the understanding that I still need to review and accept the written contract.\u00a0 And you agree to start 2-weeks after you sign the contract.
