{"id":10572,"date":"2012-09-09T17:14:57","date_gmt":"2012-09-10T00:14:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=10572"},"modified":"2012-09-09T17:16:04","modified_gmt":"2012-09-10T00:16:04","slug":"the-fish-that-got-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/svapm.org\/?p=10572","title":{"rendered":"The Fish That Got Away"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.<\/em>\u00a0 ~John Buchan<\/p>\n<p>Probably the biggest challenge associated with launching and maintaining a successful PMO is having the fortitude and spirit to keep on fishing.\u00a0 PMO\u2019s must evolve to survive. \u00a0\u00a0PMO\u2019s must also have continuous executive support to thrive.\u00a0 Yet, for some PMO leaders, gaining executive support is like the fish that got away \u2013 they nibble on the bait, only to jump off the line while being reeled in.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Some people who fish believe the Number One way to insure more fishing success is to go fishing more often.\u00a0 The more you go fishing, the more you\u2019ll learn about fish and their habits, and that will make you a better angler.\u00a0 Spend time with your executive sponsor to establish yourself at the executive table.\u00a0 Share your business plan, your vision, and your implementation schedule.\u00a0 Present examples of what a PMO can accomplish; the possibilities are endless.<\/p>\n<p>You must leverage your relationship with your strongest supporters \u2013 the believers \u2013 to gain acceptance from your entire executive team.\u00a0 Ideally, all executives must believe in the value of project management before you can introduce it to the organization as a whole.\u00a0 As the very least, you must garner senior executive support <em>while<\/em> introducing project management to the entire organization.\u00a0\u00a0 Identify your allies first, establish a relationship with them, and rely on them to help spread the word.\u00a0 Market your PMO; convince your executive stakeholders of the value of project management.<\/p>\n<p>Is your PMO no longer attracting fish?\u00a0 Be sure to experiment more this year; the best time to experiment is when what you\u2019re doing isn\u2019t working.\u00a0 If something isn\u2019t working, why stick with it?\u00a0 Go to your tackle box; try a different color, size, speed, or technique until you discover that the fish want.\u00a0 Got a few nibbles?\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Another time to experiment is when the fish are running; identify what\u2019s working really well in the PMO, try a different color, size, speed or technique to see if you can find something that appeals to ever more or bigger fish.<\/p>\n<p>When open-watering fishing, it\u2019s important to pay attention to your sonar; it\u2019s easier to keep your bait in productive water.\u00a0 With sonar, it\u2019s easier to determine which areas are holding fish, and those areas are where we should concentrate our efforts.\u00a0 Test the PMO waters by launching a stakeholder survey;
