Today let&#8217;s explore how to build some bridges across troubled waters and the best ways to <strong>improve not increase<\/strong> communication. <strong>Tomorrow<\/strong>, we will talk more about individual communication issues as we age in our roles.<\/p>\n<p>You cannot really achieve desired results without questioning , testing, and improving the current rules of\u00a0 <strong>Communication . Do you know what they are?<!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>OWLS (over 40) use their stories, experience and history as the backdrop to the real annoyance of younger folk on projects.\u00a0 The youngest seek the possibilities of &#8220;spontaneous renewal and lawless choices&#8221; hidden in their na\u00c3\u00afve view of &#8220;just get it DONE!&#8221;. Boomers want justice from old wounds and want endless\u00a0 dialogues of\u00a0 learned\u00a0 sessions, or\u00a0 at the other extreme, the arrogance, of &#8220;We don&#8217;t need no stinking badges: &#8221; (when improvements in demeanor are suggested by the XYs or the after 1965 bunch.)\u00a0 The Gen Ys are motivated to &#8220;strut their stuff&#8221; give the Customer what they want (including the source code?).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let&#8217;s review Herman&#8217;s team: Imagine them in a project meeting: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Otis the owl<\/strong> is very conservative about changes and is still untrusting of what technology tells him.\u00a0 <strong>Betty Boomer<\/strong> actually believes working harder gets things done, has no time to communicate even though she should.\u00a0 <strong>George the Gen X <\/strong>gets mad all the time, is skeptical, and determined to be autonomous as all costs.\u00a0 He works during the meetings to show the others he hates idle talk.\u00a0 <strong>Tex the new Y guy<\/strong> has all kinds of ideas, wants to show stuff, and could be CEO if they would only let him for a couple of days.\u00a0 His message is &#8220;connect me, and I will get it done for you!&#8221;\u00a0 (Note we all start as Y&#8217;s, or Why&#8217;s, or Wise)<\/p>\n<p>Herman says,\u00a0 Really, there is TOO MUCH communication out there to get anything done anymore, and most of it is fuzzy. We need to work on the communication we have.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Herman&#8217;s visit to the Corporate Knowledge Wizard (CKW)\u00a0 suggests\u00a0 he do some things which will encourage cross generational\u00a0 communication:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The proposed\u00a0 Strategy:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Ensure a common language<\/strong>&#8211;agree on what good communication looks like and sounds like without generational color.\u00a0 Agree on proper tone! Control the text messaging trend\u00a0 that isolates those who don&#8217;t get it.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Create ground rules of &#8220;clear communication&#8221;<\/strong> with the team and see what is working and why? (Use appreciative strategies; more on that tomorrow)<\/p>\n<p>3\u00a0 <strong>Practice the ONE message needed rule<\/strong>: Cover all the Bases (W5H): Online\u00a0comments are limited to bullets and only informational elements:\u00a0\u00a0What, why, when, where, who, agreement on how. If you can&#8217;t day it in\u00a0ONE message, walk it or talk it.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 <strong>Avoid disagreements and\u00a0 discussion online<\/strong>, as yes, they are documentation, but they are also permanent documentation.\u00a0 How many companies have had their legal troubles and fines from .&#8221;too candid&#8221; or\u00a0damning emails, with editorial\u00a0 or inappropriate material in them.<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>Decide what REALLY needs to communicated<\/strong> In project planning and project review sessions; decide ahead of time what will be communicated and the best way.<\/p>\n<p>6. <strong>Include visuals in emails<\/strong> to enable others to see what you are talking about.<br \/>\nInclude a picture and signature to make your email more civil in the eyes of Boomers other OWLS.<\/p>\n<p>Herman called for an offsite and collected some data.
